ATHLETE & PARENT

Developmental Pathways

"The athlete is always the apex of the pyramid. The role of the parent and coach is to provide scaffolding and support."

ATHLETE

Children participate in sports for their own reasons—whether it’s having fun, making friends, learning new skills, or building confidence. As parents and coaches, it’s important to listen to these motivations and support them. When children feel understood and encouraged, they’re more likely to stay engaged, grow through sport, and strive for success.

PARENT

Parents often have their own reasons for wanting their children in sports, but when those motives conflict with the child’s, it can create a negative experience. Problems arise when winning becomes the focus, when kids are pushed to specialize too early, or when parents live through their children’s achievements. The healthiest outcome happens when kids play for their own enjoyment—fun—rather than external pressures. When sport is about personal reward, children are more likely to stay engaged, grow, and avoid burnout.
